Direct Line - overview of services and benefits

In 1985, Direct Line unveiled a radical concept to the UK insurance market - they became the first insurer to provide service using the telephone as a primary means of contact. This heralded a revolution in the car insurance industry as the complications of arranging a car insurance policy seemed to disappear and policy costs began to fall.

Since entering the market, Direct Line have diversified to offer a wide range of insurance and financial services - much of their success is attributed to their common-sense approach, eliminating complications and providing genuine personal care and contact to customers. In 1999, Direct Line purchased the UK's third-leading breakdown service provider, Green Flag. Today, Direct Line employs over 9,000 people and provides a wide portfolio of products and services to customers across Europe.

Direct Line customers benefit from a generous no claims discount scheme - they are the first insurer in the UK to allow Named Driver no claims discounts. This means that if you've been a named driver on another policy entitled to a no claims discount, you can carry that bonus with you when starting your own policy. Direct Line also allow motorcyclists to carry their no claims discount onto a car policy, and enable company car drivers to move their bonus for careful driving onto a private car insurance policy. If you have a second car and insure it with Direct Line as well, they give you a 10% discount for having more than one policy - and what's more, they'll match your main policy no claims bonus on the second vehicle.

Other perks and discounts for Direct Line customers include: 10% off insurance policies bought online; online policy management; uninsured driver cover; up to 65% no claims discount; optional legal protection; guaranteed car hire option; 25% discount on home insurance premiums; up to 25% off on breakdown cover; and optional levels of excess on car insurance policies.

Direct Line operates local rate phone lines for insurance enquiries - these are open 8am to 9pm weekdays, 9am to 5pm Saturdays and 10am to 5pm Sundays. In the event of a claim, there is a 24-hour accident recovery line. Additionally, Direct Line offer a straight-forward online claiming procedure which allows you to register the details of your claim at any time. Details of Direct Line policies are always available online for your convenience, and existing customers can update or renew their policies at www.directline.com.
