Cheaper insurance for student drivers

Being young puts you at an automatic disadvantage when trying to get cheaper car insurance. For most people, being a student means that it is even more important to get the best car insurance quote around, regardless of your age. Luckily, there are a number of insurance providers offering special schemes for careful young drivers, and deeper discounts for students.

One of the most important things for student drivers to do is ensure that they keep an eye on the total running cost of their vehicle - to do this, take all the annual expenses associated with your car (insurance, MOT, tax) and divide by 12. To this number, add the amount you spend each month on maintenance and mileage. In some cases, the insurance saving awarded against an older car is counteracted by higher maintenance or fuel costs associated with older vehicles. Like most things in student life, it's best to set a budget and try to keep within it.

In an effort to do that, bear in mind that insurance companies are likely to award students discounts for proof they're enrolled in classes. Also, car insurance discounts can usually be awarded for joining the student union and getting good marks on your courses.

As with all young drivers, adding a Pass Plus certification to your license can save you up to 30% on your student car insurance premiums. If you need contents insurance, many companies give a good discount to students taking out car cover alongside their contents insurance policy. Additionally, as many students put the bulk of their mileage on going between university and home, it's worth remember that keeping your annual mileage down will have a good impact on your premium.

Student drivers should be exceptionally mindful of the ordinary things we all can do to keep our insurance costs down: drive an older car with a less powerful engine, keep a clean driving record, fit an alarm or immobiliser, and park your vehicle securely overnight.
